I'll tell you a bit about two long-running stories in discrete mathematics: one about order and disorder in large networks, and one about the tension between regularity, symmetry and disorder when "organising objects into groups". Two of the highlights from my time at ISTA so far were new advances in these directions.
The talk will be accessible to a non-mathematical audience!
