Abstract:
Fluctuations are a fundamental part of all physics related to irreversible processes. As we zoom in and look at more fundamental constituents, these fluctuations are increasingly relevant for the thermodynamics of quantum systems and in consequence to the fundamental limits of quantum engineering. Focusing on the paradigmatic task of timekeeping, I will elucidate how fluctuations come into play and how quantum coherence can actually be leveraged to exponentially beat some well established classical limits.
