One of the most intriguing aspects of the biological world is that all protein molecules found in nature are homochiral – that is, they are ‘Lproteins’, made up exclusively of L-amino acids and the achiral amino acid glycine. My presentation will focus on the preparation and properties of mirror image ‘D-protein’ molecules not found in nature. I will discuss the use of racemic crystallography for protein structure determination by Xray crystallography. I will also discuss our current research on the systematic development of D-proteins a candidate human therapeutics.
