In a quickly changing environment, railroads are coming under increasingly great pressure from alternative transportation systems. These competing systems can often implement technical changes, along with the connected increase in effectiveness and efficiency, in a quicker and more cost-effective manner, through the application of and transition to intelligent digital technologies. Modern control and monitoring systems in transportation measure data of all kinds, such as forces, weights, loading conditions, and speeds, monitor the material stress as well as the wear and tear, and deliver values for statistical, cross-linked queries and alarm security alerts. An essential prerequisite for this is the acquisition and further development of variables and parameters that can qualitatively and quantitatively assess and monitor the transportation systems with regard to physical bases.
The increasing demands for transparency, comfort, and cost-reduction in railroad-systems present the challenge of continuous optimization of technical systems, in particular to wheel-rail experts.
