The ventral cochlear nucleus is the starting point for auditory processing in the brain. To date, only a single subtype of inhibitory interneuron has been described there. Using a combination of transgenic mouse lines, electrophysiology, and large-scale tissue imaging, we have identified a new group of neurons that may account for over 90% of inhibitory cells in this brain region.
