DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Prof. Guillaume Vives\nhosted by Latha Venkataraman\nA
bstract: How can molecular motion be transformed into function? Molecular
machines offer unique opportunities to control motion at the molecular sca
le\, yet achieving the complexity and functionality of natural systems rem
ains challenging. This lecture will present our approach to designing mol
ecular machines that convert controlled mechanical motion into function.Fi
rst\, switchable molecular tweezers will be presented as versatile platfor
 ms for controlling luminescence\, magnetism\, catalysis\, and even sol-gel
transitions. Our work on cyclodextrin-based rotaxanes will also be highli
ghted\, exploiting the cone-shaped structure and selective functionalizati
on of cyclodextrins to achieve unidirectional\, active motion through an i
 nformation-ratchet mechanism.
