DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Eugene Demler\nhosted by Maksym Serbyn\nAbstract: Deve
lopments in optical technology bring new modalities of probing electron sy
stems. This talk will review several examples of the correlated states rev
ealed by novel optical probes with an emphasis on the theoretical models n
ecessary for interpreting experimental results. We will start by discussin
g recent experiments in the pseudogap phase of the high Tc cuprates that h
ave been interpreted as the light induced Meissner effect. We will approac
h this phenomenon from the perspective of nonlinear dynamics of the sine-G
ordon model triggered by the strong terahertz pump pulse. This interpretat
ion suggests that these experiments reveal strong superconducting correlat
ions in the pseudogap state but do not require photoinduced superconductiv
ity. We will also discuss sensitive light reflection experiments in layere
d materials used as probes of electronic states. Examples include the obse
rvation of the mixed state between an electronic Wigner crystal with an el
ectron liquid as well as the demonstration of a new type of magnetism in m
 oire systems.
