DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jan Philip Solovej\nAbstract: In this talk\, the way i
n which a stable macroscopic world arises from its microscopic ingredients
will be discussed. The structure and properties of matter as we see it ar
ound us is formed mainly by the electric forces between the basic elementa
ry particles. Equally important roles are played\, however\, by phenomena
of quantum physics such as the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the Pa
uli exclusion principle. In particular\, the importance of the exclusion p
rinciple by describing the catastrophic consequences it would have if this
principle was violated will be illustrated.
