DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Tomas Jungwirth\nAbstract: In this lecture we will int
roduce the field of spintronics which has revolutionized\nmagnetic storage
technologies\, is making its way into semiconductor microchips\,\nand rep
resents one of the most rapidly developing scientific fields in nanoelectr
onics.\nWe will start by introducing basic physical concepts of spintronic
s which\nrecognize that\, apart from the electrical charge\, each electron
carries a microscopic\nmagnetic moment called spin. Its utility led to di
scoveries of many new physical\neffects in magneto-electronics\, some of w
hich are now widely used in applications\nand others still challenging our
basic understanding of relativistic quantummechanics\nphenomena. Current
spintronics research topics pursued in our group\nand worldwide will be in
 troduced in the lecture.
