DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Lotte Søgaard-Andersen\nAbstract: The function of cel
ls critically depends on the proper spatial organization of their\ncompone
nts with proteins and other macromolecules targeted to defined\nsubcellula
r locations. In eukaryotes as well as in bacteria this organization\, i.e.
cell\npolarity\, forms the basis for key cellular processes\, such as cel
l shape determination\,\ndifferentiation\, regulation of chromosome dynami
cs and cytokinesis as well as\nmotility. Despite the immense importance of
cell polarity\, the mechanisms\nresponsible for its establishment are sti
ll poorly understood. Using the rod-shaped\ncells of the bacterium Myxococ
cus xanthus we are investigating how bacteria\nestablish and maintain cell
polarity to regulate motility. I will present data\ndemonstrating how two
small Ras-like GTPases function together with the\ncytoskeleton in these
 processes.
