DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Bernard Chazelle\nAbstract: Just as physics speaks the
language of mathematics\, the life sciences speak the\nlanguage of algori
thms. The difference lies in the high descriptive complexity of the\nsyste
ms commonly found in social and biological organisms. While history plays
a\nminor role in physics\, it is the distinguishing feature of the living
world. Algorithms\nprovide not only the expressivity needed to model compl
ex living systems but also\nthe analytical tools for their analyses. This
(self-contained) talk will discuss the\npower of "natural algorithms" thro
ugh the lens of "influence systems\," a broad\nfamily of high-dimensional
dynamical systems for which algorithmic tools can do\nwhat differential eq
 uations cannot.
