DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Howard Eichenbaum\nAbstract: Some view the hippocampus
as supporting episodic memory\, whereas others\nbelieve that the hippocam
pus supports spatial navigation. How do we reconcile the\nepisodic memory
and spatial navigation views of hippocampal function? Here I will\ndiscuss
evidence that the hippocampus is critical for memory of order of events i
 n\nunique experiences\, even when space is not involved. Furthermore\, I w
ill describe\nrecent evidence that hippocampal “time cells” (as contrast
ed with “place cells”)\nencode specific moments in the course of tempora
lly extended experiences in both\nspatial and non-spatial memory. These fi
ndings support an emerging view that the\nhippocampus supports episodic me
mory by creating a “scaffolding” for the\norganization of events within
 their spatial and temporal context.
