DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Carol A. Barnes\nAbstract: Aging is associated with sp
ecific impairments of learning and memory\, some of which are similar\nto
those caused by damage to temporal or frontal lobe structures. For example
\, healthy older\nhumans\, monkeys and rats all show poorer spatial\, reco
gnition and working memory\, than do\ntheir younger counterparts. Rats and
monkeys do not develop age-related pathology such as\nAlzheimer’s and Pa
rkinson’s diseases\, which makes them good models for assessing functiona
l\nalterations associated with normal aging in humans. While many cellular
properties of medial\ntemporal lobe cells appear to be intact in aging an
imals\, age-related impairments in synaptic\nfunction\, plasticity and gen
e expression have been observed. Because information is represented\nby ac
tivity patterns across large populations of neurons\, an understanding of
the neural basis of\ncognitive changes in aging requires the examination o
f the dynamics of behaviorally-driven neural\nnetworks. Ensemble recording
experiments are described that suggest fundamental changes in\nthe storag
e and retrieval of information\, as well as in high level perceptual proce
ssing in aging\nhippocampal and perirhinal cortical circuits. In addition\
, frontal cortical correlates of working\nmemory are discussed. Together t
he evidence suggests that normative aging processes show both\ncell type a
nd region specificity\, and rather than uniform deterioration\, the aging
brain can show\nchanges consistent with adaptive\, compensatory processes.
