DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Andrew Murray\nAbstract: How fast can cells evolve nov
el behaviors\, what types of mutations lead to these\nbehaviors\, and how
many different mechanisms can lead to a single type of\nbehavior? I will d
iscuss our progress in analyzing the evolution of behavior in the\nbudding
yeast\, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Our basic approach is to apply strong\n
selection for interesting traits in laboratory populations with high mutat
ion rates\,\ncharacterize the behaviors that appear\, track down the mutat
ions that cause these\nbehaviors\, and see what we can learn about how our
populations evolved and then\nspeculate about how natural populations hav
e evolved over the much longer time\nscales of the non-laboratory world. T
he behaviors we have evolved include forming\nmulticellular aggregates as
a better way of exploiting public goods\, using regularly\nfluctuating sel
ection to produce a circadian oscillation in cells' ability to stick to ea
ch\nother\, and the genetic equivalent of associative learning: the evolut
ion of the ability\nto use an earlier innocuous signal to induce a protect
ive response that will keep a\nlater noxious environment from killing cell
 s.
