DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Enrico Coen\nAbstract: Life exhibits a remarkable dive
rsity of patterns\, yet the evolutionary processes\nunderlying this phenot
ypic diversity operate under major constraints. These include\nthe constra
ints of development which define a restricted space of readily generated\n
forms and patterns. There are also genetic constraints that restrict the e
xtent to\nwhich genotypes may diverge within and among populations. In add
ition there are\nselective constraints that influence variation according
to fitness. A major challenge\nis to understand how these various constrai
nts interact to define observed\nphenotypic patterns. I will describe a ra
nge of experimental and computational\napproaches to this problem using An
tirrhinum (Snapdragon) as a model system.\nThis system has the advantage o
f being amenable to both developmental and\npopulation genetic analysis. T
he work involves collaboration with population\ngeneticist Nick Barton (Vi
enna) and computational scientist Andrew Bangam\n(Norwich).
