DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Anne Ridley\nAbstract: In multicellular organisms\, ce
lls are constantly moving from one place to another.\nThis cell migration
is essential during development of the organism as well as\nmaintenance of
tissues in the adult. For example\, cells of the immune system\nmigrate o
ut of the blood stream to fight infections and help repair wounds. In\nhum
ans\, cell migration also contributes to the development of cancer. During
\ncancer progression\, cancer cells invade and migrate through the tissues
and enter\nand then exit the blood stream to form secondary tumors\, know
n as metastases.\nWe are investigating how cancer cells attach to the endo
thelial cells lining blood\nvessels\, with the long term goal of inhibitin
g cancer metastasis. I will describe how\nwe have identified specific prot
eins inside cells and on the surface of cells that are\nneeded for cancer
cells to interact with endothelial cells\, and how reducing the\nexpressio
n of these proteins can decrease cancer metastasis.
