DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Immanuel Bloch\nAbstract: The realization of ultracold
quantum gases at Nanokelvin temperatures has marked\na milestone in moder
n quantum physics. With the help of laser light\, these ultracold\natom cl
ouds can be stored in artificial periodic potentials created by laser ligh
t - so\ncalled optical lattices - that allow us to explore fundamental asp
ects of strongly\ninteracting fermionic and bosonic quantum matter. In ver
y recent experiments\, we\nhave been able to record single snapshots of a
quantum fluid in which individual\natoms are detected with single lattice
site resolution. This opens unprecedented\nnovel opportunities for analyzi
ng and manipulating strongly interacting quantum\nsystem. In my talk\, I w
ill review some of the recent experiments on strongly\ncorrelated quantum
gases in optical lattices and highlight connections to condensed\nmatter p
hysics\, quantum information science and atomic- and molecular physics.
