DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Ruth Lehmann\nAbstract: Germ cells are the stem cells
of the next generation. They are not needed for any\nvital functions of an
organism\, yet\, as sperm or egg\, they are key to reproduction.\nThus\,
due to their special needs\, we envision that these cells are endowed with
\nspecialized mechanisms that control their behavior. We are particularly
interested\nin how the germ cell program is established in the early embry
o and have found that\ntranscription is largely blocked in early germ cell
s while specific maternal products\npersist longer in germ cells than in t
he rest of the body. In order to produce gametes\nthroughout adult life ge
rm cells regulate the rate of self- renewal and\ndifferentiation. We are i
nterested in the control mechanisms that prevent\npremature differentiatio
n and that detect and eliminate aberrant gametes. We\nstudy how germ cells
defend against endogenous threats such as transposable\nelements while ke
eping the opportunity for genetic change and evolution open.
