DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jerry Coyne\nAbstract: The genetic basis of morphologi
cal\, behavioral\, and reproductive differences between\nspecies can give
us clues about the evolutionary processes that yield new species. In this\
ntalk I summarize ten years of work on two closely related species of Dros
ophila that live on\nthe oceanic island of Sao Tome\, 250 km off the coast
of Gabon. After describing the\nnumerous reproductive barriers\, both eco
logical and physiological\, that separate these\nspecies\, I summarize the
genetic basis of their differences in pigmentation and of their\nsexual i
solation and the sterility of male hybrids. Because the species form hybri
d zones\nwhere their ranges overlap\, we also can measure the degree of in
trogression between the\ntwo species\, and show that it differs markedly d
epending on the region of the genome\nanalyzed. There are not "islands of
speciation" but rather "islands of introgression".\nFinally\, I describe t
he hybrid zones between these species and the role of hybridization in\npr
oducing heightened reproductive isolation ("reinforcement"). The presence
of a hybrid\nzone in an area inhabited by only one of the two species pres
 ents us with an unsolved\npuzzle.
