DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Karsten Kruse\nAbstract: To understand the emergence o
f spatiotemporal structures in biological systems remains a\nmajor challen
ge to this day. Self-organization of a limited number of different agents
has\nbeen found to account for structure formation in sea shells\, slime m
 old aggregation\, and\nbee colonies. On a subcellular level\, however\, th
e importance of self-organization of\nproteins and other molecules for for
ming vital structures is still debated. In this talk\, I will\ndiscuss rec
ent experimental and theoretical advances indicating that self-organizatio
n\nplays an important role in cellular processes like cell division and ce
ll locomotion.\nSpecifically\, I will discuss in detail patterns formed by
the Min proteins in the bacterium\nEscherichia coli in vivo and in vitro.
These patterns constitute an important step in the\nselection of the cell
division site. I will then indicate how similar processes can account for
\ncytoskeletal polymerization waves observed in animal cells and speculate
about their role\nfor cell locomotion. Together these results show how ph
ysical concepts and methods can\nhelp us to understand vital cellular proc
 esses.
