DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Stephanie Wehner\nAbstract: Two central concepts of qu
antum mechanics are Heisenberg's uncertainty principle\, and a\nsubtle for
m of non-locality that Einstein famously called ''spooky action at a dista
nce''.\nThese two fundamental features have thus far been distinct concept
 s. In this talk\, we'll\nsee that they are inextricably and quantitatively
linked. Quantum mechanics cannot be\nmore non-local with measurements tha
t respect the uncertainty principle. In fact\, the link\nbetween uncertain
ty and non-locality holds for all physical theories. More specifically\, t
he\ndegree of non-locality of any theory is determined by two factors -- t
he strength of the\nuncertainty principle\, and the strength of a property
called ''steering''\, which determines\nwhich states can be prepared at o
ne location given a measurement at another.
