DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Laurence Hurst\nAbstract: There is considerable variat
ion in the rate at which different genes evolve. Why is\nthis? Classically
it has been considered that the density of functionally important\nsites
must predict rates of protein evolution.\nLikewise\, amino acid choice is
usually assumed to reflect optimal protein function\nand codon choice is r
andom. Here I briefly review evidence suggesting that this\nview is too si
mplistic. In particular I concentrate on how selection acting during the\n
protein’s production history can also affect gene evolutionary rates as w
ell as amino\nacid and codon choice.\nExploring the role of selection at t
he DNA and RNA level\, I specifically address how\nthe need 1) to specify
exonic splice enhancer motifs in pre-mRNA and 2) to ensure\nnucleosome pos
itioning on DNA\, impacts amino acid choice\, codon choice and rates\nof e
volution at both synonymous and non-synonymous sites.
