DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Thomas Lecuit\nAbstract: Tissues exhibit a remarkable
dual property of robustness and plasticity.\nThis relies on unique mechani
cal properties of the cell cortex and on adhesive interactions\nbetween ce
lls. Our group seeks to understand the fundamental molecular mechanisms\nr
esponsible for this property. This is essential to understand morphogenesi
s of developing\nembryos and organs\, and is severely affected in a number
of diseases\, in particular cancer\nprogression.\nTo that end we develop
a range of approaches\, from the genetic and pharmacological\nperturbation
s of molecular components\, the quantitative imaging of proteins using a\n
variety of photonic methods\, probing of the physical properties of cells
within intact\ntissues\, and predictive computational modelling of morphog
enesis at different scales\n(molecular to tissue scales).\nI will present
our current research characterizing how adhesion and cortical tension\nreg
ulate the dynamic remodelling of cell contacts in the primary epithelium o
f Drosophila\nembryos. I will first focus on the regulation of tensile act
ivity driving cell shape changes. I\nwill also address how E-cadherin-acti
n interactions control force transmission at cell\ninterfaces.\nTissue gro
wth imposes challenges to tissue cohesion. In a second part I will report
on our\nstudies of the interplay between tissue growth and tissue mechanic
 s during\nmorphogenesis
