DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Andrew Read\nAbstract: Resistance against antimicrobia
l drugs is one of the major challenges to 21st century\nmedicine. There ar
e two ways to fight resistance evolution. First\, discover and\ndeploy new
drugs. Second\, use drugs wisely\, for example in combination therapy.\nS
uch ‘wise-use’ strategies are among humanity’s largest efforts to inten
tionally\nmanage the evolution of any organism. A resistance management st
rategy widely\nadvocated by professional bodies\, medical schools and publ
ic health authorities is to\nensure very high cure rates through full adhe
rence to correct dosing regimens. I will\npropose that this resistance man
agement strategy may be promoting the very\nevolution it is designed to re
tard. There is a need for evidence-based resistance\nmanagement strategies
\, and I will discuss how these might be developed.
