DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Yukiko Goda\nhosted by Ryuichi Shigemoto\nAbstract: Sy
napses are the fundamental nodes of information transmission in the brain.
The efficacy of synaptic transmission\, called synaptic strength\, and it
s use-dependent changes are crucial for how the brain perceives the enviro
nment\, learns and stores memories. However\, the basic principles underly
ing synaptic circuits\, particularly how synaptic strengths are set and co
ntrolled in defined circuits remain to be clarified. We have addressed thi
s question by examining the interaction between multiple synapses of hippo
campal neurons using a combination of electrophysiology and imaging approa
ches. We provide evidence for a novel cellular mechanism involving glial c
ells in regulating the heterogeneity of synaptic strengths across inputs r
eceived by single hippocampal neurons. Our findings underscore the role fo
r glia in integrating synaptic transmission properties across a synapse po
 pulation.
