DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Edo Kussell\nAbstract: Bacterial populations are incre
asingly understood to be highly\nheterogeneous\, due to effects of noisy g
ene expression\, stochastic\nswitches\, and other mechanisms that maintain
phenotypic diversity.\nTheir population dynamics are thus strongly affect
ed by selective forces\nacting on different subpopulations. In addition\,
the physiological\nresponses of individual cells to fluctuating conditions
affect the\nphenotypic structure of the population. This talk presents a
theoretical\nframework for understanding these dynamics using individuals'
\nphenotypic histories observed over their ancestral lineage. The lineage\
nperspective enables the action of selection to be decoupled from that of\
nindividuals' responses.\nExperiments on continuously dividing bacterial p
opulations growing in\nmicrofluidics devices are being used to test aspect
 s of this approach.
