DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jack Harris\nhosted by Onur Hosten\nAbstract: It may s
eem unlikely that rich mathematical structures remain to be uncovered in c
lassical harmonic oscillators. Nevertheless\, systems that combine non-rec
iprocity and loss have provided a number of surprises in recent years. I w
ill describe how these systems naturally exhibit braids\, knots\, and othe
r topological structures. I will also present measurements of these struct
ures (using a cavity optomechanical system)\, and will describe their pote
ntial application in various control schemes. This will be a pedagogical i
ntroduction to these topics\, with lots of pictures and videos!
