DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Eric Thoma\nhosted by Laszlo Erdös\nAbstract: The Cou
lomb gas is a model of statistical physics appearing in a wide variety of
contexts\, from approximation theory to condensed matter physics. This tal
k will address several recent results\, including optimal Wegner estimates
\, the size of the minimal inter-particle distance\, and incompressibility
on large microscopic scales\, which all share one unifying and intuitive
idea. We will also discuss an application to the fractional quantum Hall e
 ffect.
