 is seminar will present recent advances on the manybody physics of open qu
 antum systems\, an emerging field that is being explored in condensed matt
 er\, atomic and optical platforms as well as superconducting quantum circu
 its. A pedagogical introduction will outline the state-of-the-art theoreti
 cal framework and methods\, focusing on the competition between strong int
 eractions and dissipation/decoherence. We will review unconventional aspec
 ts of dissipative phase transitions and reservoir engineering protocols fo
 r the realization of non-trivial phases. We will show how the concepts dev
 eloped in this context can also be applied to the field of quantum informa
 tion with noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices.
