DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Gero Miesenböck\nhosted by Tom Henzinger\nAbstract: W
e are pleased to invite you to the next IST Lecture\, which will take plac
e on the IST Austria campus and online.AbstractThe essential but enigmatic
functions of sleep must be reflected in molecular changes sensed by the b
rain's sleep-control systems. Insights into these systems are beginning to
reveal the physical nature of sleep pressure and the mechanisms responsib
le for its accumulation and discharge. These advances are a testament to t
he enabling power of optogenetics\, whose early days the lecture recalls i
n a handful of personal vignettes.About Gero MiesenböckGero Miesenböck i
s an Austrian neurophysiologist and is known as the founder of optogeneti
cs. He received his education at the University of Innsbruck and Umeå Un
iversity in Sweden\, and graduated from the University of Innsbruck Medica
l School in 1993. Miesenböck has received a great number of honors and aw
ards including the Brain Prize\, which he received in 2013\, and in 2015 h
e was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.RegistrationTo register for at
