DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Conny Aerts\nhosted by STEM fatale organizing team\nAb
stract: Please note that this Round Table is for women only. This event wil
l undoubtedly be a great opportunity to discuss career development with a
woman who fought for her position at a time in the recent past when deserv
ing women were not given leadership roles in academia. Other topics of dis
cussion may include what motivates women in science\, why do women choose
particular career paths\, and anything else you want to discuss. We hope
to see many of you there!  Conny Aerts is a professor at KU Leuven whose
research covers stellar astrophysics\, including stellar structure & evo
lution and variable stars. She also leads the Chair in Asteroseismology a
t the Radboud University Nijmegen and is an External Scientific Member of
the Max Planck Society. Prior to high-precision space photometry\, Conny
developed rigorous mathematical methods to detect and identify non-radial
stellar oscillations.  Her team has designed and applied statistical cla
ssification methods in a machine-learning context\, and discovered numerou
s gravity-mode pulsators in space photometry. Her role as a pioneer of as
 teroseismology (http://www.springer.com/us/book/9781402051784) earned her
many awards\, including two ERC Advanced grants\, and in 2012 she was the
first woman to receive the prestigious Francqui Prize (http://www.francqu
 ifoundation.be/new-page-4/francqui-prijs-limietdatum-15-oktober/laureaten/
) in Science and Technology since its creation in 1933.
