DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Patrice Le Gal\nhosted by Björn Hof\nAbstract: Fiber
networks encompass a wide range of natural and man-made materials. The thr
eads or fi \nlaments from which they are formed\nspan a wide range of leng
th scales\; from nanometers as in biological tissues and bundles of carbon
nanotubes\, to millimeters as in paper\nand insulation materials. The stu
dy of fi \nber clustering of natural flocks could be useful for improving
fabrication processes\, \nsuch as in the paper and textile industries for
instance. \nHere\, we use the example of aegagropilae that are the remains
of a seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) found on Mediterranean beaches. \nFirs
t\, we characterize di\nfferent aspects of their structure and mechanical
response which make possible to draw some conclusions on their \nformation
process in particular by analysing the statistical distributions of size
and mass of these balls. We show that these natural\naggregates are formed
in open sea by random aggregation and compaction of \nfibers which are h
eld together by friction forces. \nFinally\, we report results from two la
boratory experiments\, first on the behavior of a single fiber in a turbul
ent von Karman flow where \nwe demonstrate that the conformations of flexi
ble fibers in turbulence are analog to conformations of flexible polymers
\nin a solvent and then on the aggregation of fibers by a Stokes drift in
 a wave-induced flow.
