DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Manu Prakash\nhosted by Martin Loose\nAbstract: This I
nstitute Colloquium is offered as a webinar.  If you would like to attend
this webinar\, please register below.Marine plankton exhibit a Diel Verti
cal Migration with vertical displacement scales from several tens to hundr
eds of meters. Even at the scale of small phytoplankton and zooplankton (1
00 μm to  a few mm) the interaction of this vertical swimming behavior w
ith hydrodynamics affects large scale distribution of populations in the o
cean and is thus an important component of understanding ocean ecology. Ho
wever\, concurrently observing organismal physiology and behavior is chall
enging due to the vast separation of scales involved. Resolving physiologi
cal processes involves sub-cellular (micron) resolution while tracking fre
ely swimming organisms implies vertical displacements of several meters. W
e present a simple solution to this problem in the form of a “hydrodynam
ic treadmill” incorporated into a table-top scale-free vertical tracking
microscope. We use this method to study the behavior of freely swimming m
 arine plankton\, both in lab and on-board a research vessel\, revealing a
rich space of dynamic behavioral states in marine micro-organism. Time p
ermitting\, I will also share our efforts in bringing oceanography to
“seatizens” around the world by democratizing tools for science access
ible to sailors across the world.
