DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Roland Roth\nhosted by Herbert Edelsbrunner\nAbstract:
In many systems of soft-matter physics or in biology highly confined liqu
ids are of great importance. In these systems the interactionbetween the b
oundary of the system and the liquid are relevant andresults in an interes
ting and rich interplay between physics andgeometry. This talk will first
address the question of how thermodynamicquantities of highly confined flu
ids depend on the shape of theconfining boundary. The presented connection
between geometry andthermodynamics is based on the Hadwiger theorem from
integralgeometry. These ideas will then be applied to problems ofsoft and
 biological matter.
