DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Stephanie Rudolph\nhosted by Sandra Siegert\nAbstract:
The cerebellum controls both motor coordination and higher cognitive func
tion\, and cerebellar dysfunction can result in various disorders\, rangin
g from ataxia to autism-like symptoms. To understand how cerebellum regula
tes behavior\, a detailed understanding of local computations within the c
erebellum\, and long-range connections between the cerebellum and its targ
et regions are warranted. My present research focuses on the former. I rec
ently identified a ubiquitous interneuron in the cerebellar cortex that du
e to its unique position within the circuit is poised to expand computatio
nal flexibility in the cerebellar cortex. In a second study\, I investigat
ed the mechanisms that underlie the integration of multisensory informatio
n in the input layer of the cerebellar cortex and behavior. I found that g
enetically disrupting context-specific neuromodulation results in behavior
al abnormalities\, including anxiety and social deficits\, while not affec
ting motor performance. My future research will elucidate how neuromodulat
ion controls cerebellar processing during physiological challenges\, and t
o identify the target brain regions that enable the cerebellum to control
 behavior in health and disease.
