DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Gunnar Carlsson\nhosted by Herbert Edelsbrunner\nAbstr
act: Over the last 15-20 years\, the idea that methods of topology (the ma
thematical discipline that studies shape) can be used effectively to study
large and complex data sets has gained a great deal of currency\, and the
re are numerous and diverse examples of powerful applications.  The idea
is that there should be a new method of mathematical modeling\, whose outp
ut is not an equation or system of equations but rather a network or graph
that represents the "shape" of the data.  We have recently found that th
e methods are particularly appropriate for integration with the Deep Learn
ing methodology.  I will discuss the methods\, with numerous examples.Gun
nar Carlsson\, Professor Emeritus at Stanford University\, is an American
mathematician who specializes in Algebraic Topology.  He is especially kn
own for his work on Segal’s Burnside ring conjecture as well as topologi
cal data analysis.  In addition\, Carlsson is the cofounder and president
of Ayasdi\, a predictive technology company that focuses on big data\, ma
chine learning and artificial intelligence.  He has received numerous NSF
grants and many other notable awards and grants such as the Alfred P. Slo
an Fellowship as well as grants from the Air Force Office of Scientific Re
search and the Office of Naval Research.Free shuttle buses are provided to
