 sidency of the Council of the European Union in fall 2018\, the Institute 
 of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) will\, together with the F
 ederal Ministry of Education\, Science and Research (BMBWF)\, organize a h
 igh profile public event on October 22.Third-party funding is an important
  source of support for a research institute\, and IST Austria’s successf
 ul performance in this area has contributed significantly to its developme
 nt. During the event speakers from across Europe will discuss the role of 
 competitive research funding in science from several different angles. The
  event will provide a platform for the open exchange of ideas and the cons
 ideration of several questions\, including:What are the key factors to con
 sider when designing\, implementing\, and evaluating a competitive researc
 h grant program?How does competitive research funding affect research inst
 itutions?And does competitive funding help to develop and support Europe's
  research talent in full\, or does it perpetuate the participation gap?The
  goal is to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and discussion in
  the area of public sector research with a special focus on curiosity-driv
