DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jürg Fröhlich\nhosted by Laszlo Erdös\nAbstract: Th
e purpose of this lecture is to explain how\, in quantum mechanics\, inter
esting information about a physical system can be reconstructed from long
streams of data concerning primitive events featured by the system.Example
s of experiments on concrete systems\, such as experiments measuring the n
umber of photons trapped in a cavity\, conducted at the Ecole Normale Supr
ieure in Paris\, will be considered. A brief sketch of a new approach to u
nderstanding the appearance of particle tracks - "Mott tracks" - in suitab
ly chosen detectors will be presented. The lecture will end with remarks on
the meaning of events and on the time evolution of states\, as described
by the "ETH approach to Quantum Mechanics".
