In this talk I will explain a new method for counting instances of the Brauer-Manin obstruction (BMO) to the Hasse principle (HP) in families, where no uniform description of Brauer elements across the family is available. The method consists of three novel ingredients, whose common goal is to produce an asymptotic formula for the number of BMOs to HP in the family, ordered with respect to a natural height function. This talk is based on several works in progress with Leo Schfer, Damaris Schindler and Florian Wilsch and with Alexandros Konstantinou, Margherita Pagano and Harry Crawford Shaw.
