Synapses process and store information, and might be a target for aging
and neurodegenerative processes in our brains. Our group established
protocols to directly visualize protein dynamics during synapse assembly
and plasticity in living animals (Drosophila larvae) using confocal
microscopy, and adapted high-resolution light microscopy (stimulated
emission depletion microscopy, STED) for the analysis of synapse
substructures. Data on the protein architectures organizing the synaptic
vesicle release process at presynaptic terminals, as well as on the
coordinated assembly of pre- and postsynaptic specializations, will be
presented.
