The path from a basic, curiosity driven, research project to a world-changing practical application is often surprising, and truly mind-boggling. But there are certain rules and policies, which may facilitate this incredible voyage. Several case studies will be discussed as examples of successes and failures.
Haim Harari is a “Founding father” of IST Austria and is currently Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. He was President of the Weizmann Institute in Israel from 1988 to 2001, after joining the Institute in 1966, becoming an Associate Professor at the age of 26, the youngest ever, and a Full Professor three years later. He has contributed significantly to particle physics and to science education. During his presidency, the Weizmann Institute, dedicated to basic research, became a world leader in income from intellectual property.
